His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has inspected the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council (SRCC) project in Damongo, the regional capital on Wednesday 24^th August 2022.

The building is part of a number of projects being constructed in all the six newly created regions in Ghana, to see to the efficient governance administration of development through the decentralisation agenda.

The project when completed will see the administrative work to bring accelerated development and socio-economic growth in the Savanah Region.

The Savannah Region of Ghana is one of the two regions that was couched out of the Northern Region. The Region is divided into seven districts; Bole, Central Gonja, North Gonja, East Gonja, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba, and West Gonja, as well as seven constituencies such as Bole/Bamboi, Damango, Daboya/Mankarigu, Salaga North, Salaga South, Sawla/Tuna/Kalba and Yapei/ Kusawgu.

Other projects ongoing alongside the RCC are the   Regional Administration Blocks and some Departments such as Health, Agriculture, Education Security Services, and Staff Accommodations among others in the Savannah Region.

The five-day Implementation Support mission meeting that opened in Accra on Monday by the World Bank with the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) to discuss the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP) and GPSNP 2 has ended in Accra today, Friday, 19^th August 2022.

The meeting had productive sessions with the technical teams of both the MLGDRD and the MoGCSP.

The issues raised and feedback from the discussions moving forward is going to iron out implementation arrangements for the benefit of the project and in the interest of the target population that the project is designed to serve in order to alleviate poverty and increase productivity.

A Deputy Minister for MLGDRD, Hon. Collins Ntim in a speech read on behalf of the Minister for MLGDRD, congratulated the mission team for committing to the success of the implementation support mission on the GPSNP and GPSNP 2.

Hon. Ntim commended the World Bank for their support to the Ministry which has been significant over the years in the areas of deepening the decentralisation system, enhancing community and urban development; and other interventions to improve environmental sanitation.

According to the Deputy Minister, currently, aside from the GPSNP, the World Bank is supporting the Ministry to implement the Secondary Cities Support Project as well as the Gulf of Guinea Lagging Regions Project which has been prepared and is virtually ready to kick-off in the five (5) regions of northern Ghana.

“Interestingly it is modeled alongside the GPSNP concept. being prepared. This gives a strong indication of the impact and success GPSNP has had and expected to be translated into GPSNP 2” He added.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that GPSNP support to poor people has been significant as seen with the results that the project has supported more than 35,000 households under its Labour-Intensive Public Works programme and over 21,000 under the Productive Inclusion component, adding that “we see our success stories and commit to ensuring we trumpet these to the country and the world”.

Hon. Collin Ntim was quick to state that “my attention has been drawn to emerging issues that requires action by the Ministry, which is support from top Management and collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection”.

He gave the assurance that the two Ministries will work together to ensure successful completion of GPSNP and delivery of GPSNP 2.

An Implementation Support Mission meeting on the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP) led by the World Bank with the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has opened in Accra.

The five-day mission was scheduled from Monday, 15th to Friday, 19th August 2022 to assess the progress of GPSNP (in operation) and GPSNP 2 (to commence) as well as to review GPSNP in readiness for the project closure.

The meeting was set to review the progress of work on the results framework, Labour Intensive Public Works (LIPW) and Productive Inclusion (PI) activities - components under the Project- on the MLGDRD side with Ghana National Household Registration data collection activities and Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash transfers operations and reassessment - components under the Project -  on the MoGCSP side.

In a speech read on behalf of the Hon. Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD), Mr. Daniel Botwe, expressed the Ministry’s appreciation to the World Bank for their continued support for Government’s priority development areas; particularly, Safety Nets for the poor and vulnerable in Ghana.

He said “we are excited about our collective achievements under the GPSNP and confident that the lessons learnt will translate into a more effective and efficient delivery of GPSNP 2”.

 Touching on the achievements on the project, the Minister mentioned that since its effectiveness from June 2019 and scheduled to end by December 2022 with 80 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country; the Ministry has disbursed a total amount of GHS 91.8 million as direct grants to beneficiaries under both the Productive Inclusion (PI) and Labour-Intensive Public Works (LIPW) components.

He expressed Government’s appreciation to the Bank, for agreeing to scale-up the Project GPSNP 2, which became effective in January 2022 and will now cover 100 MMDAs, including urban Districts.

He gave an assurance on behalf of the Ministry to take on board feedback in all the areas that will be discussed as part of the mission to improve delivery at all levels.

The GPSNP and GPSNP 2 projects were designed to alleviate extreme poverty and enhance the productivity and incomes of the poor in the country.
